Scence Co-Founders

We’ve spent years researching, perfecting and meticulously testing every product in our natural skincare range.

Of course, this also involves getting up close and personal with each individual ingredient – everything from sustainability, to how it combines in the mix, to effects on the skin.

One of our most popular products are our plastic-free, vegan deodorants. Let’s take a closer look at and find out more about what goes in to making these beautiful balms.

Organic Coconut Oil (Cocus Nucifera Oil)

Made by pressing fresh coconut flesh, or dried coconut flesh (called copra), Coconut Oil is a wonderful moisturiser, packed full of Vitamin E and essential amino acids which help to soothe and heal the skin.

We use it in lots of our vegan skincare products as it also helps to provide a silky glide on application, and it’s a great base for all the other lovely ingredients..

Coconut Oil also contains caprylic and lauric acid, which form part of the barrier function of your skin. This means it is antibacterial and helps to maintain your skin’s natural flora. This quality is perfect for a natural deodorant, as it stops the odor-producing bacteria.

Organic Arrowroot (Maranta Arundinacea Root Powder)

Cultivated throughout Southeast Asia, the West Indies, Australia and South Africa, the Arrowroot plant is the source of another key ingredient in our natural deodorants – Arrowroot Powder.

The plant rhizome (the underground stem) is ground up to produce a silky white powder, which is wonderfully absorbent (helping you to feel fresh and dry), as well as being great for calming irritated skin.

Magnesium Hydroxide

Don’t let the name scare you! Magnesium Hydroxide is a safe white powder which occurs naturally in its mineral form in nature, where it is called brucite. It is often used to relieve indigestion, and is a key ingredient is Milk of Magnesia and other popular antacids.

This wonderful ingredient is our go-to when it comes to creating natural deodorants that don’t cause irritation, while neutralising body odor.

We don’t use bicarbonate of soda for this very reason. Although bicarb does stop bacteria, lots of people find it irritates their skin. This is possibly due to the fact that it is alkaline, which contrasts with the skin’s natural acidity, causing loss of the moisture barrier, leading to dryness and inflammation.

Magnesium Hydroxide however, balances the body’s natural pH, and kills odor-causing bacteria without being absorbed into the skin or affecting moisture levels.

Mango Butter (Mangifera Indica Seed Butter)

Hoorah for beautiful Mango Butter! Produced from the large flat seed kernel of the mango tree, it is a wonderful base ingredient in natural skincare.

Mango Butter has skin softening, soothing & moisturising properties. It helps to combat dry skin, eczema and dermatitis which can be really uncomfortable, especially in the underarm area.

It is also packed full of Vitamin A and Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants, helping to keep skin healthy and helping to heal any wounds or chaffing.

You’ll also find it to be light, non-greasy with a very subtle aroma, great if you prefer a neutral deodorant. It lasts for ages without the need for preservatives, and is suitable for all skin types.

Sunflower Wax (Helianthus Annuus Seed Cera)

Sunflower seed oil undergoes a process called winterisation to produce Sunflower Wax.

We use it in our deodorants as it helps the melted butters and oils harden and thicken.

This means we can pour our melted formulas into our recyclable, cardboard packaging safe in the knowledge that at normal room temperature it will remain a solid balm, while also melting gently onto the skin when applied.

It’s also perfect for us as it’s a vegan ingredient, so we don’t need to use beeswax to solidify our products.

And don’t forget the essential oils!

With the exception of our essential oil-free natural deodorant, you’ve got a range of different fragrances to choose from.

We use the finest quality essential oils, including delicate rose geranium oil, and fresh cedarwood essential oil, so you’re sure to find a fragrance to suit you. Visit our deodorants product page to see the full range.

What you won’t find – aluminium!

If you’re wondering ‘where can I buy aluminum-free deodorant?’, you’ve come to the right place!

If you’re looking for aluminum-free deodorant, you can choose any product from our range in complete confidence.

The key here is that we sell deodorants, not antiperspirants. Sweating is a natural, healthy process for the body, which antiperspirants aim to stop or considerably reduce, using aluminium to block pores.

As you will have seen, we’ve picked several of our ingredients because they effectively combat the bacteria that causes odor, but we don’t want to stop the body self-regulating and sweating. Happy, healthy bodies that smell fresh and fragrant is our goal!
